We have been retained by a private investment firm to assist in their search for a Controller for their organization. The firm makes equity investments in a diverse range of middle market enterprises, capitalizing each investment, allowing flexibility in the types of transactions it pursues and an indefinite time horizon for its ownership of any given asset. This flexibility has made the company a preferred acquirer in situations involving closely-held companies or unique deal dynamics.
Position: The results-oriented Controller will be responsible for the firm’s accounting function. Assisting the firm management, will provide financial analyses, budgets, expense reviews, billing and collections oversight, conflicts management and development of cost savings recommendations that will enhance the financial operations of the firm
Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities
- Accounting & Recordkeeping
- Oversee corporate accounting through QBO, including maintaining the company’s system of accounts, creating new entities, setting up charts of accounts and classes (e.g., for company subsidiary activity), and reviewing transactions.
- Maintain books and records for non-AD investor entities and select GP/upper‑tier entities (see QBO list for audited entities prepared by the company).
- Budgeting, Reporting & Forecasting
- Prepare consolidated annual and quarterly budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses using custom Excel templates; include historical reporting and EBITDA adjustments.
- Produce quarterly balance sheets and complete financial packages via CorPro for fund accounting.
- Fee & Invoice Management
- Coordinate the quarterly management fee process (invoicing, collection, tracking deferred fees via the Mgmt Fee Tracker).
- Prepare and follow up on invoices to portfolio companies and funds; allocate shared expenses and record collections.
- Track legal invoices for company and portfolio companies.
- Payroll & Compensation Administration
- Serve as the primary payroll contact and Netchex administrator; process biweekly and special payrolls, track bonuses and benefits, and maintain comprehensive compensation history.
- Cash Flow, Vendor & Banking Management
- Manage corporate cash flow by overseeing vendor payments, maintaining a detailed vendor list (including funding sources and payment methods), coding monthly AMEX transactions, and reconciling bank accounts and money market accounts.
- Monitor account balances, allocate monthly bank fees, and manage distributions (including owner-related transactions).
- Regulatory & Tax Compliance
- Coordinate with tax accountants for all State, Local, and Federal filings (e.g., tax returns, annual 1099s, and tax credit paperwork), review and file returns, manage tax payments and notices, and track tax refunds.
- Maintain the entity registry—including timely annual report filings, registered agent renewals, and Corporate Transparency Act BOIR filings.
- New Entity & Platform Setup
- Determine and implement the appropriate accounting platform for new portfolio investor entities and for upper‑tier (Manager/GP/Holdco) entities, considering audit requirements; set up new entities in QBO and CorPro as needed.
- Human Resources, IT & Administrative Support
- Oversee HR-related functions (employee benefits and vendor management) and manage outsourced IT services (e.g., Savant IT) and banking platform administration (Truist One View, online banking).
- Maintain the company Knowledge Book and a shared Task List for monthly/periodic activities.
- Insurance, Licensing & Legal Coordination
- Manage commercial insurance renewals (D&O, property, business interruption), prepare the annual City of Atlanta business license renewal, and monitor related deadlines.
- Oversee plane commitments and invoicing (e.g., N945AC and PC‑12) as well as any related tax or usage tracking.
- Manager/GP/Holdco Specific Duties
- Maintain books and records in QBO for select GP entities and coordinate their regulatory filings; determine the accounting platform for new upper‑tier entities, considering audit requirements.
Education/Experience
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting
- CPA certification is preferred
- 5-7 years of experience in a similar position; professional service firm experience is required
- Ideal candidate will have current or prior experience working within Private Equity
- Strong knowledge of accounting and financial management principles
- Able to be adaptable and possess Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with a diverse executive team and staff
